About
Fallout Community Edition is a fully working re-implementation of Fallout with the same original gameplay, engine bug fixes and some quality-of-life improvements, that works mostly hassle-free on multiple platforms. It is the sibling of the Fallout 2 Community Edition already in this catalog, by the same author, and is based on the v1.1 Reference Edition of the game.
No game content is included. You must own the game; the Community Edition executable is a drop-in replacement that sits in your own Fallout folder and uses its master.dat, critter.dat and data folder. Window size and fullscreen are set in f1_res.ini.
- Native on Windows, macOS (Intel and Apple silicon), Linux, Android and iOS
- Any window size or fullscreen via f1_res.ini
- Engine bugs fixed, gameplay untouched
- Drop-in replacement for falloutw.exe
What you need
The port contains none of the game. These come from your own copy and stay on your machine.
Your Fallout installation
Fallout from GOG or Steam, installed. The Community Edition uses its master.dat, critter.dat and data folder. On macOS and Linux, use a Windows installation as the base or extract the GOG installer with innoextract; the MacPlay version's GameData folder also works on macOS.
Depending on your copy, master.dat, critter.dat and data may be all lower-case or all upper-case. Either rename them or edit the matching entries in fallout.cfg. Music files (.ACM) must be upper-case. Source of these fingerprints
Setup
- 1
Install Fallout from GOG or Steam.
- 2
Windows: extract the archive and copy fallout-ce.exe into your Fallout folder. It replaces falloutw.exe.
- 3
macOS: copy your Fallout folder somewhere like /Applications/Fallout (or extract the GOG installer with innoextract), then copy fallout-ce.app into it and run it. macOS 10.11 or later.
- 4
Linux: copy your Fallout folder somewhere, copy the fallout-ce binary into it, install libsdl2-2.0-0, and run ./fallout-ce.
- 5
If the game cannot find its data, check the file-name case against fallout.cfg, and set the window size in f1_res.ini.
Questions people ask
- Is the Fallout Community Edition download safe?
- Yes, as far as provenance and integrity can be proven. The download on this page is Fallout Community Edition's own GitHub release (v1.1.0), pinned to a SHA-256 in Recompiled's public lockfile, so you can confirm the file you received is byte for byte what the project published. Fallout Community Edition is open source, so anyone can read what the program does. Hash the file on the Verify page before you run it.
- Is Fallout Community Edition legal?
- Yes. Fallout Community Edition is a native port built from a decompilation of the game, and the download contains none of Fallout: it reads the game from a copy you already own. What is not legal is obtaining a ROM or disc image you do not own, and Recompiled never hosts or links to one.
- Do I need the original game to play Fallout with Fallout Community Edition?
- Yes. Fallout Community Edition contains none of Fallout, so you need a copy you already own: Your Fallout installation. The What you need section says exactly what to supply. Nothing you supply leaves your machine.
