About
OpenRCT2 is an open-source re-implementation of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, the park construction and management game Chris Sawyer originally wrote in x86 assembly. It plays the original scenarios and sandbox parks and adds support for modern platforms, an improved interface, improved guest and staff AI, more editing tools, increased limits and cooperative multiplayer.
It also brings back mechanics from the first RollerCoaster Tycoon that RCT2 dropped, such as the in-game mountain tool, the "have fun" objective and launched coasters. If you own RollerCoaster Tycoon 1 and its expansions, OpenRCT2 can load those scenarios too.
No game content is included. OpenRCT2 reads the graphics, sounds and scenarios from your own RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 installation.
- Windows, macOS and Linux, including ARM Windows
- Cooperative multiplayer
- Improved guest and staff AI, more editing tools, higher limits
- RCT1 scenarios and mechanics when you own RCT1 as well
- Monthly releases and a large plug-in scene
What you need
The port contains none of the game. These come from your own copy and stay on your machine.
Your RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 installation
RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 from Steam (the Triple Thrill Pack) or GOG, installed. OpenRCT2 needs the original game's files to play. If you also own the original RollerCoaster Tycoon and its expansions, you can point OpenRCT2 at them to play the RCT1 scenarios.
Setup
- 1
Install RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 from Steam or GOG.
- 2
Run the downloaded installer, or extract the portable archive into a folder of your choosing.
- 3
Start OpenRCT2. It needs the folder where RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 is installed; tell it where that is if it does not find it on its own.
- 4
Optionally point OpenRCT2 at your RollerCoaster Tycoon 1 installation to add the original scenarios.
Questions people ask
- Is the OpenRCT2 download safe?
- Yes, as far as provenance and integrity can be proven. The download on this page is OpenRCT2's own GitHub release (v0.5.6), pinned to a SHA-256 in Recompiled's public lockfile, so you can confirm the file you received is byte for byte what the project published. OpenRCT2 is open source, so anyone can read what the program does. Hash the file on the Verify page before you run it.
- Is OpenRCT2 legal?
- Yes. OpenRCT2 is an open-source reimplementation of the game's engine, and the download contains none of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2: it reads the game from a copy you already own. What is not legal is obtaining a ROM or disc image you do not own, and Recompiled never hosts or links to one.
- Do I need the original game to play RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 with OpenRCT2?
- Yes. OpenRCT2 contains none of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, so you need a copy you already own: Your RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 installation. The What you need section says exactly what to supply. Nothing you supply leaves your machine.
