About
Pokémon Crystal Legacy is built on the pret disassembly of Crystal and sets out to fix the complaints people have had about Generation 2 for twenty years: weak learnsets, a level curve that falls apart after Johto, an undercooked villain plot and a thin postgame. It stays a Crystal game throughout; there is no physical/special split, no later-generation Pokémon and no difficulty gimmicks.
Highlights include reworked Gym Leader, Elite Four and rival teams, redistributed wild encounters so more of the 251 are reachable, a move reminder, a level cap and running shoes. The full change list is linked from the project's README.
The project publishes its patches as a zip in each GitHub release. Recompiled pins that zip, unpacks the BPS inside it in your browser and applies it to the Crystal dump you supply. No pre-patched ROM is ever produced on this site.
- Revised moves, learnsets and evolution methods
- Rebalanced Gym Leaders, Elite Four, rival and Rocket encounters
- More of the 251 Pokémon catchable before the credits
- Move reminder, level cap and running shoes
- Separate patches for Crystal 1.0 and Rev 1
What you need
The patch contains none of this. It comes from a cartridge you own and stays on your machine.
Pokémon Crystal Version (Game Boy Color)
An English Pokémon Crystal cartridge dump, either the original USA release (1.0) or the later USA/Europe revision (Rev 1). The project ships a separate patch for each; your file's fingerprint selects the right one.
- USA 1.0sha1

The SHA-1 values are stated in README.md inside the release zip's "Patching Instructions" folder and match the build targets listed by pret/pokecrystal. The CRC32 values are the source checksums the author embedded in each BPS patch. Alternate-language cartridges are not compatible.
Fingerprints from the project's own documentation.
How patching works here
- 1
Drop your Pokémon Crystal Version dump on the panel. It is hashed in your browser and matched against the fingerprints below; a wrong region, revision or an already-modified file is refused.
- 2
The pinned BPS patch, inside the author's release zip, is fetched from the GitHub release and its SHA-256 compared with the lockfile. If your browser cannot fetch it directly, download it from the release and drop it in; the same check runs.
- 3
The patch is applied in memory. The format's own checksum of the result is compared with what we got, and the patched file is offered as a download. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is kept.
- 4
Load the saved .gbc in an emulator for the Game Boy Color.
Questions people ask
- Is it legal to download the Pokémon Crystal Legacy patch?
- The patch contains only the author's changes, not the game. You apply it to a dump of a Pokémon Crystal Version cartridge you own, and that dump never leaves your device. Recompiled does not host or link to ROMs, and never offers pre-patched files.
- Do I need a Pokémon Crystal Version ROM?
- Yes, a clean dump of your own cartridge (USA 1.0 or USA, Europe Rev 1). The page checks its fingerprint in your browser and refuses anything else before the patch is applied.
- Where does the patch file come from?
- From the author's own GitHub release (V1.3.1). Its SHA-256 is pinned in a public lockfile and checked before use, so you get exactly what the author published.
