About
Pokémon Yellow Legacy is built on the pret disassembly of Yellow. It is the opening entry in TheSmithPlays' Legacy trilogy and applies the same philosophy: keep the game Generation 1 through and through, but make the choices a careful designer would have made with another year, from learnsets that actually give Pokémon usable moves to trainers whose teams were built on purpose.
All 151 Pokémon are obtainable in one save, badly balanced moves and type matchups are nudged rather than rewritten, and several of the original's famous bugs are fixed. The full change list is linked from the project's README.
Patches ship as a zip in each GitHub release. Recompiled pins that zip, unpacks the BPS inside it in your browser and applies it to the Yellow dump you supply. No pre-patched ROM is ever produced on this site.
- All 151 Pokémon obtainable in one playthrough
- Learnsets and trainers rebalanced within Generation 1
- Famous Generation 1 bugs fixed
- Quality-of-life features without changing the game's shape
What you need
The patch contains none of this. It comes from a cartridge you own and stays on your machine.
Pokémon Yellow Version (Game Boy / Game Boy Color)
An English Pokémon Yellow cartridge dump (the USA/Europe release). The project notes that .gb and .gbc dumps are the same bytes and both work.

The SHA-1 is stated in README.md inside the release zip's "Patching Instructions" folder and matches the Pokemon Yellow (UE) target listed by pret/pokeyellow. The CRC32 is the source checksum the author embedded in the BPS patch. Alternate-language cartridges are not compatible.
Fingerprints from the project's own documentation.
How patching works here
- 1
Drop your Pokémon Yellow Version dump on the panel. It is hashed in your browser and matched against the fingerprints below; a wrong region, revision or an already-modified file is refused.
- 2
The pinned BPS patch, inside the author's release zip, is fetched from the GitHub release and its SHA-256 compared with the lockfile. If your browser cannot fetch it directly, download it from the release and drop it in; the same check runs.
- 3
The patch is applied in memory. The format's own checksum of the result is compared with what we got, and the patched file is offered as a download. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is kept.
- 4
Load the saved .gbc in an emulator for the Game Boy / Game Boy Color.
Questions people ask
- Is it legal to download the Pokémon Yellow Legacy patch?
- The patch contains only the author's changes, not the game. You apply it to a dump of a Pokémon Yellow Version cartridge you own, and that dump never leaves your device. Recompiled does not host or link to ROMs, and never offers pre-patched files.
- Do I need a Pokémon Yellow Version ROM?
- Yes, a clean dump of your own cartridge (USA, Europe). The page checks its fingerprint in your browser and refuses anything else before the patch is applied.
- Where does the patch file come from?
- From the author's own GitHub release (V1.0.10). Its SHA-256 is pinned in a public lockfile and checked before use, so you get exactly what the author published.
